“There’s nothing I can learn from a personal trainer that I can’t learn from a magazine.”
That was a statement I once made from a soapbox of insecurities and naivety.
Now, I’m an avid proponent of the benefits of personal training. In fact, to quote a song made famous by The Monkees, I’ll secretly admit to you that now, “I’m a believer”.
What caused me to change my tune? Final thoughts below, in Part 4:
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
Say what you will about personal training, but it’s hard to argue with results.
After 6 long months I achieved my goal: 10 pounds lost (with added bonuses: lower body fat percentage, superhuman amounts of energy all day, and the ability to indulge in my favorite treats without fear of gaining 5 pounds). Basically, I felt free.
I’m not perfect, and never will be. But, I’m happy in my own skin and that’s worth every penny I invested.
I’m a believer. I couldn’t leave her if I tried
This is my story, and what worked for me won’t work for everyone. But, if you’re interested in hiring a trainer, here are 3 things I believe are important to know:
Right Trainer: Finding the right trainer is essential to making your fitness dreams come true.
- Trainers do what they do because they want to help people get happy & healthy bodies. It’s your choice as a consumer who you work with – look for one you trust, and move onto the next until you find someone who’s your perfect match.
Right Time: Don’t even think of hiring a trainer until you’re ready to make major lifestyle changes.
- I won’t lie – personal training is a big investment. Depending on your financial situation hiring a trainer may mean giving up another luxury like a cell phone, high speed internet, or your daily latte habit (add it up, you’d be surprised!) So, you really have to want to do it & commit to it at a time that’s right for you.
Right Attitude: Are you ready to get real?
- This may be the most important thing to remember. The right trainer will make you get real about yourself, real fast. Be prepared to check all hang-ups, preconceptions, ego & excuses at the door. There’s nothing comfortable or pleasant about making a life-style change, but at the end of that long, hard road waits true happiness. Love yourself enough to take the journey.
